Rectal cancer patients may avoid surgery with new combo therapy
NCT ID NCT04864067
First seen May 08, 2026 · Last updated May 08, 2026
Summary
This study tested a treatment plan for people with locally advanced rectal cancer that uses short-course radiation followed by chemotherapy, instead of the usual long-course radiation, surgery, and more chemo. The goal was to see if this approach could make the cancer disappear completely and stay gone for at least a year, allowing patients to avoid surgery. The trial enrolled 39 adults with stage II or III rectal cancer and measured how many achieved a complete response without needing an operation.
