Shock therapy for swallowing? small trial tests NMES in kids with CP
NCT ID NCT07329387
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested whether a gentle electrical stimulation (NMES) to the neck muscles helps children with cerebral palsy swallow better. Twenty-six kids were split into two groups: one got real NMES plus swallowing therapy, the other got a sham device plus therapy. Researchers measured changes using questionnaires and muscle activity tests. The trial is complete, but results are not yet published.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) device
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a non-drug way to improve swallowing in children with cerebral palsy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 26 children, so results may not apply to everyone. The sham group also received swallowing rehab, making it hard to isolate NMES's effect.
