Laughing gas may take the edge off vasectomy

NCT ID NCT07245628

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether self-administered nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can reduce anxiety and pain during office vasectomy. Fifty men will be randomly assigned to breathe either nitrous oxide or plain oxygen during the procedure. Researchers will measure anxiety, pain, and how well patients cope, aiming to see if this simple approach improves the experience.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Nitrous Oxide

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug way to ease anxiety and pain during in-office vasectomy.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small trial (50 people) testing a short-term effect. The gas may not reduce anxiety or pain more than placebo, and side effects like dizziness or nausea are possible.
