New monitor could help preemie babies in pain without extra pokes

NCT ID NCT05223790

First seen May 13, 2026 ยท Last updated May 13, 2026

Summary

This study tested a special monitor called NIPE that looks at heart rate changes to see if it can measure pain or discomfort in very premature babies (born before 34 weeks) who are on breathing machines and sedated. Researchers watched 50 babies before, during, and after care to see if the NIPE readings matched standard pain scores. The goal was to find a gentler way to check pain without disturbing the baby.
