Could nicotine gum silence the ringing in your ears?
NCT ID NCT07772089
First seen Aug 19, 2026 · Last updated Aug 19, 2026
Summary
This trial asks whether a single piece of nicotine gum can reduce the loudness of tinnitus—the phantom ringing or buzzing in the ears—in non-smoking adults who have had chronic tinnitus for at least six months. Participants will chew either a 4 mg nicotine gum or a flavor-matched placebo gum in two separate sessions, without knowing which is which. The study measures changes in tinnitus loudness and the ability to focus on relevant sounds, comparing the nicotine session to the placebo session.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Nicotine polacrilex gum (4 mg)
- What this could lead to
- If effective, a single dose of nicotine gum might offer a temporary way to quiet the phantom ringing of tinnitus and improve focus on sounds.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early, small trial (29 people) testing only one dose. Nicotine can have side effects and is addictive, and the effect may not last or may not work for everyone.
