New DNA test could speed up pneumonia diagnosis in ICU patients
NCT ID NCT07626073
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a new diagnostic tool called RPIP, which uses advanced DNA sequencing to quickly identify the germs causing pneumonia and their drug resistance. The goal is to see if this method helps doctors choose the right treatment faster than current tests. The study will involve 200 ICU patients with pneumonia across multiple hospitals.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Respiratory Pathogen ID/AMR Panel (RPIP) – a targeted next-generation sequencing test
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to faster, more accurate diagnosis of pneumonia in ICU patients, helping doctors choose the right antibiotics sooner and potentially saving lives.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 200 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The new test may not be more accurate or faster than existing methods in real-world settings.
