New nerve block combo may ease heart surgery pain
NCT ID NCT06285773
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether adding a recto-intercostal fascial plane block (RIFPB) to a standard pecto-intercostal fascial plane block (PIFPB) improves pain control after open-heart surgery. Forty adults scheduled for heart surgery received both blocks with the anesthetic bupivacaine. Researchers measured pain scores and recovery quality over 24 hours, and tracked how much extra pain medication was needed.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine (marcaine)
What this could lead to
If effective, this combination of nerve blocks could provide better pain control after heart surgery, reducing the need for strong painkillers like tramadol.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 40 participants. Results may not apply to all heart surgery patients, and nerve blocks carry risks like infection or bleeding.
