New pain block could ease recovery after stomach surgery
NCT ID NCT07396545
First seen Feb 10, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study tests a newer nerve block technique (external oblique intercostal block) against a standard one (erector spinae plane block) for pain after laparoscopic stomach removal. About 184 adults having this surgery will be randomly assigned to one of the two blocks. The main goal is to see if the newer block is at least as good at reducing the need for opioid painkillers in the first 24 hours after surgery.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
nerve block (external oblique intercostal plane block or erector spinae plane block)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, effective option for managing pain after stomach surgery, potentially reducing the need for strong painkillers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial comparing two nerve blocks. The newer block may not work as well as the standard one, and results may not apply to all patients.
