Zapping brain tumors before surgery may stop their return

NCT ID NCT01891318

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving focused radiation (radiosurgery) before surgically removing brain metastases can prevent the tumors from coming back. About 36 adults with 1 to 4 brain metastases will receive radiosurgery followed by surgery. Researchers will also monitor side effects and determine the best radiation dose.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

radiosurgery (focused radiation)

What this could lead to

If it works, this approach could reduce the chance of brain metastases coming back after surgery, improving local control.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase trial with only 36 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Risks include radiation side effects and the possibility that the treatment does not prevent recurrence.
