New pain drug could cut opioid use after pancreatic surgery

NCT ID NCT07423650

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a continuous infusion of nefopam, a non-opioid painkiller, can reduce opioid use and pain after pancreatoduodenectomy (a major pancreatic surgery). About 93 adults will be randomly assigned to receive nefopam, lidocaine, or standard epidural pain relief. Researchers will measure opioid consumption and pain scores over 48 hours after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Nefopam

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a better way to manage pain after pancreatic surgery, reducing the need for opioids and their side effects.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial focused on pain control, not a cure. The results may not apply to other surgeries or patients, and nefopam may not prove superior to existing options.
