Simple neck stretches may ease voice and anxiety after thyroid surgery

NCT ID NCT07277647

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether gentle head and neck stretching exercises, started the day after thyroidectomy, could help patients' voice function, anxiety, and psychological resilience. 103 adults were randomly assigned to either the stretching program plus education or routine care alone. Researchers measured voice, anxiety, and resilience before surgery and at several points up to one month after. The goal is to see if this simple, low-cost intervention improves recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

structured patient education and head-neck stretching exercises

What this could lead to

If effective, these simple exercises could become a standard part of recovery after thyroid surgery, helping patients regain voice function and feel less anxious.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with 103 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercises are low-risk, but benefits may be modest or not significantly better than routine care.
