New nasal COVID vaccine could replace shots
NCT ID NCT07215520
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This Phase 2a trial tests a new nasal COVID-19 vaccine (NDV-HXP-S-KP.2) against an approved mRNA shot in 200 adults who have already been vaccinated. The goal is to see if the nasal vaccine is safe and tolerable. Participants are either 65 or older, or 18-64 with a condition that raises their risk for severe COVID-19.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Newcastle disease virus-based nasal COVID-19 vaccine (NDV-HXP-S-KP.2)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a needle-free, mucosal COVID-19 booster option that may reduce transmission and offer longer-lasting protection.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2a trial with only 200 participants, so results may not generalize. The vaccine uses a novel virus-based platform, and safety or immune response may not match the approved mRNA vaccines.
