Can a nasal swab stop a superbug? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT06282510

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a 5-day course of a nasal antiseptic (povidone iodine) can reduce or eliminate Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus, from the nose of colonized patients. Researchers will enroll 120 adults with a history of C. auris colonization or infection. The goal is to see if this simple treatment can lower the amount of fungus on the body and potentially reduce spread.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

povidone iodine (10%) nasal antiseptic

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a simple way to reduce Candida auris on the body, potentially lowering infection risk in healthcare settings.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial focused on colonization, not infection. The antiseptic may not eliminate the fungus from all body sites, and results may not apply to all patients.
