New alert system aims to curb opioid overdoses by boosting naloxone prescriptions

NCT ID NCT06271668

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study tests a computer alert that reminds doctors to prescribe naloxone—a medicine that reverses opioid overdoses—when they give patients high-risk opioid painkillers. The goal is to see if the alert increases naloxone co-prescribing and reduces overdoses. About 200,000 patients receiving opioids in hospitals or clinics will be included, but those with cancer or in hospice care are excluded.
