Gene may influence how nalmefene works in heavy drinkers
NCT ID NCT02639273
First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 28 times
Summary
This study tested whether nalmefene, a drug that blocks opioid receptors, changes how heavy drinkers' brains respond to alcohol-related cues and how much alcohol they choose to take. Thirteen healthy heavy drinkers (ages 21-60) participated. They received nalmefene or a placebo, then had brain scans and could self-administer alcohol. The study also looked at whether a specific gene (OPRM1) affects these responses.
