Common overdose drug tested as potential stroke treatment

NCT ID NCT04918719

Summary

This study tested whether giving an intravenous antioxidant drug called N-acetylcysteine (NAC) could help people recover better after a stroke. NAC is already FDA-approved for treating acetaminophen overdose. The trial involved 4 adults who had a recent ischemic stroke and were not candidates for standard clot-removal procedures. Participants received either the NAC infusion or a placebo over 20 hours, and their recovery was tracked for 90 days.
