Eye drop trial aims to delay cornea transplants for common vision disease

NCT ID NCT04440280

Summary

This study is testing whether N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) eye drops can slow the progression of Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy, a common eye disease that currently requires corneal transplant surgery. About 45 adults with advanced Fuchs' and cataracts will use either NAC drops or placebo drops for 28 days before their scheduled combined cataract and corneal transplant surgery. Researchers will measure oxidative stress in eye fluid and check if the drops improve vision symptoms or corneal health to see if this treatment could become a new option to manage the disease.
