Soothing sounds may slash sedative doses during scopes
NCT ID NCT07763860
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether listening to low-tempo instrumental music during a gastroscopy or colonoscopy can lower the amount of sedative medication needed. Adults scheduled for these procedures will be randomly assigned to receive either standard sedation plus music through headphones or standard sedation alone. The main goal is to compare the total sedative dose between the two groups, with additional measures including post-procedure pain, recovery time, and patient satisfaction.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Low-tempo instrumental music (60-80 beats per minute) played through headphones during the procedure, in addition to standard sedation.
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this simple, drug-free addition could reduce sedative use, speed recovery, and improve comfort for people undergoing common endoscopic procedures.
- What could go wrong
- The effect may be small or inconsistent, and results from this single-center trial may not apply broadly. Music might not reduce sedation needs for everyone.
