Headphones in the OR: music may boost pleasant dreams during sedation
NCT ID NCT07638072
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether listening to music through headphones during sedation with propofol increases the chance of having a dream and makes that dream more pleasant. 300 adults having minor procedures will be randomly assigned to hear their favorite music, a similar but unfamiliar song, or silence. Researchers will ask about dream recall and satisfaction after recovery, aiming to see if a simple music intervention can improve the sedation experience without extra risk.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Music (preferred or non-preferred) delivered via headphones
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could show that a simple, low-cost music intervention makes sedation more pleasant and reduces the need for extra drugs.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study focused on dreaming, not on curing or treating a disease. The results may not change standard care, and the effect of music on dreaming could be small or inconsistent.
