New wheelchair gears could save shoulders and boost independence

NCT ID NCT05776030

First seen Nov 10, 2025 · Last updated Apr 24, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study is testing a new wheelchair design that lets users change gears, similar to a bicycle. The goal is to see if having different gear ratios makes pushing easier on flat ground, uphill, or over carpet, and reduces shoulder pain. About 30 manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injuries will try the wheelchair and compare it to their own. If successful, this design could help people stay active and independent longer.
