Preterm baby brain scans may predict future thinking abilities

NCT ID NCT02083822

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looked at 600 babies born between 25 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. Each baby had an MRI scan around their original due date. Researchers then tested their thinking and problem-solving skills at age 5. The goal was to see if early brain images could predict later learning challenges. No drugs or treatments were tested.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors predict which preterm babies might need extra support for thinking and learning skills later in childhood.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not find clear links between early MRI and later abilities, and results may not apply to all preterm infants.
