Preterm baby brain scans may predict future thinking problems

NCT ID NCT02083822

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 24, 2026

Summary

This study followed 600 babies born between 25 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. They received an MRI scan around their original due date. Researchers then tested their thinking and problem-solving skills at age 5. The goal was to see if early brain images could predict later learning or behavior challenges. No treatment or drug was tested.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors predict which preterm babies may need early support for thinking and learning skills.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only looks for links between MRI results and later abilities, so it cannot prove cause or offer a therapy.
