Could a 7-Day antibiotic course every 8 weeks tame bronchiectasis Flare-Ups?

NCT ID NCT07274020

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether taking the antibiotic moxifloxacin for 7 days every 8 weeks (for a year) can reduce lung infection flare-ups in people with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. 140 adults who have had at least two flare-ups in the past year will be randomly assigned to either the intermittent moxifloxacin regimen plus standard care, or standard care alone. The main goal is to see if the antibiotic schedule lowers the number of exacerbations.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Moxifloxacin (an antibiotic taken by mouth)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could give doctors a new way to reduce lung infections and hospital visits for people with bronchiectasis.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial with 140 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Moxifloxacin can cause serious side effects like tendon damage and nerve problems, and long-term antibiotic use may lead to drug resistance.
