Ancient heat therapy tested to prevent post-transplant bladder pain

NCT ID NCT06198517

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether moxibustion, a traditional therapy that burns herbs near the skin, can prevent hemorrhagic cystitis (painful bladder inflammation) in 266 patients receiving stem cell transplants. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either standard care or standard care plus daily moxibustion for two weeks after transplant. Researchers will track pain scores and bladder symptoms for 100 days.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
moxibustion
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to prevent a painful complication after stem cell transplant.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study without a placebo control, so results may be influenced by patient expectations. Moxibustion may not reduce pain or cystitis risk significantly.
