Can a simple mouthwash tame the painful side effects of radiation?
NCT ID NCT07748442
First seen Aug 05, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests two different mouthwashes—benzydamine hydrochloride and super saturated calcium phosphate—to see which better prevents and manages oral mucositis, a painful inflammation of the mouth lining, in head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation therapy. Participants will use one of the mouthwashes during their treatment, and researchers will track the severity of mouth sores weekly. The study also measures a protein in saliva to see if it can predict how severe the mucositis becomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Benzydamine hydrochloride mouthrinse and super saturated calcium phosphate oral rinse
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could identify a better mouthwash to reduce the severity of painful mouth sores during radiation therapy, improving quality of life for head and neck cancer patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small early-stage trial, so results may not be conclusive. The effectiveness may vary among individuals, and there is a risk of side effects from the mouthwashes themselves.
