Mouthwash vs. COVID: can a rinse reduce viral spread?

NCT ID NCT04931004

First seen Jan 30, 2026 · Last updated Jun 04, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This early study tested whether certain mouthwashes could reduce the amount of SARS-CoV-2 virus that infected people breathe or cough out. 34 adults with confirmed COVID-19 provided breath and saliva samples before and after using a mouthwash or water. The goal was to see if mouthwash could lower the virus in the mouth and breath, which might help reduce spread to others.
