Counseling plus exercise may beat exercise alone for TOS pain
NCT ID NCT07668206
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding motivational interviewing (a type of counseling) to a home exercise program can improve pain and arm function in people with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). Seventy adults with TOS will be randomly assigned to either exercise alone or exercise plus up to four counseling sessions over six weeks. Researchers will measure pain, function, sleep, and mood at the start and end of the program.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Motivational interviewing (counseling sessions)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to ease pain and improve arm function for people with thoracic outlet syndrome.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 70 participants. The benefit may be small or no better than exercise alone, and results may not apply to everyone with TOS.
