Can a simple repellent shield kids from mosquito viruses?
NCT ID NCT05452447
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This large study tested a device called Mosquito Shield that releases a repellent (transfluthrin) to keep mosquitoes away. Nearly 7,000 children aged 4-16 in Sri Lanka took part. The goal was to see if the device reduces infections from viruses like dengue. Researchers tracked infections over two years by testing blood samples.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Transfluthrin (a chemical repellent released from a passive device)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to protect entire communities from diseases like dengue and chikungunya.
What could go wrong
The trial is completed but results are not yet widely known. The repellent may not reduce infections enough to change public health policy, and effectiveness can vary by environment.
