Can a smartphone app help you care for an aging loved one at home?

NCT ID NCT05877586

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a mobile app called CLARE designed to train and support family caregivers of older adults with COVID-19. Researchers enrolled 50 caregivers aged 35 or older who were the primary helper for a loved one aged 55+ after hospital discharge. The app provided guidance on hospital discharge, COVID-19 care, and caregiver self-care. The goal was to see if caregivers found the app easy to use and whether it improved their sense of preparedness.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a simple mobile app helps family caregivers feel more prepared and supported when caring for older adults at home after a hospital stay.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 50 participants and no comparison group. The results may not apply to all caregivers, and the app's impact on actual health outcomes is not measured.
