Could a probiotic boost breast cancer treatment? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07552181

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This Phase II trial will test whether adding a live biotherapeutic product called MO-03 (a type of probiotic) to standard chemotherapy and the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab can improve outcomes for 50 people with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer. Participants will take MO-03 capsules twice daily until surgery, and the main goal is to see if the cancer completely disappears by the time of surgery. The study is not yet recruiting and will follow participants for five years after surgery to track cancer recurrence and survival.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
MO-03 (a live biotherapeutic product, a type of probiotic) taken as a capsule twice daily, plus standard pembrolizumab and chemotherapy
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination could improve the chance of eliminating all cancer before surgery, potentially reducing recurrence risk in early triple-negative breast cancer.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-site Phase II trial with no control group, so results may not be definitive. The added benefit of MO-03 over standard therapy alone is uncertain, and side effects from the combination are not yet well understood.
