Heart surgery brain fog: scientists hunt for a blood clue

NCT ID NCT07231731

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated May 09, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study looked at 48 older adults (ages 65-80) having heart bypass surgery to see if a small molecule called microRNA-151-5p is linked to memory and thinking problems after the operation. Researchers measured levels of this molecule and inflammation markers in the blood before and after surgery, and tested thinking skills daily. The goal was to understand why some people experience cognitive decline after heart surgery, which could lead to better ways to predict or prevent it.
