Meditation and exercise may combat muscle wasting in dialysis patients

NCT ID NCT07724587

First seen Jul 24, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026

Summary

This trial tests whether adding mindfulness meditation during dialysis sessions and progressive resistance training before dialysis can improve muscle strength, muscle mass, and quality of life in people on maintenance hemodialysis who also have sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss). Seventy-six participants are randomly assigned to standard care, exercise alone, or exercise plus meditation. Researchers measure changes in physical function and muscle thickness over 12 weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
mindfulness meditation during dialysis combined with pre-dialysis progressive resistance training
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to help dialysis patients with sarcopenia regain muscle strength and improve daily function.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 76 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The interventions require patient cooperation and may not be feasible for everyone.
