Scientists to inject migraine patients with protein to spark aura attacks

NCT ID NCT07342296

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will give 21 people with migraine with aura an infusion of a protein called PACAP-38, or a placebo, to see if it can trigger an aura attack. The goal is to better understand what causes migraine aura, not to test a treatment. Participants will be monitored for 12 hours after the infusion.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help researchers understand what causes migraine aura, potentially pointing toward new treatments.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 21 people. It is designed to trigger symptoms, not to treat them, so there is no direct benefit to participants. Results may not apply to all migraine patients.
