Wisdom teeth may hold key to simpler orthodontic decisions

NCT ID NCT07181707

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at 200 healthy people to see if the growth stage of upper wisdom teeth (third molars) on X-rays matches the maturity of the midpalatal suture—a bone seam in the roof of the mouth that guides orthodontic treatment. Researchers used cone beam CT scans and X-rays to compare these two measures. If a strong link exists, dentists could use routine X-rays instead of extra CT scans to plan treatments like palate expansion.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If a reliable link is found, dentists might use routine X-rays to decide on palate treatments without extra scans.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed observational study—not a treatment trial. The correlation may be weak or not useful in practice.
