A hidden gut condition may explain many stubborn diarrhea cases
NCT ID NCT06530836
First seen Sep 04, 2026 ยท Last updated Sep 04, 2026
Summary
Researchers are studying 116 people with chronic watery diarrhea to see how many actually have microscopic colitis, a gut condition that standard tests often miss. Participants will give blood and stool samples and undergo a full colonoscopy with tissue biopsies from different parts of the colon. The study aims to measure how common microscopic colitis is in this group and to compare the rates of its two main types, lymphocytic and collagenous colitis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If microscopic colitis proves to be a common cause of chronic diarrhea, doctors may diagnose it more often and treat it sooner.
- What could go wrong
- This study only observes and measures, so it cannot prove what causes the diarrhea. The results may not apply to all patients with chronic diarrhea.
