Vitamin D3 and microneedling: a new hope for alopecia areata?

NCT ID NCT07243977

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two treatments for alopecia areata, a condition causing patchy hair loss. One group receives microneedling alone, while the other gets microneedling plus topical vitamin D3. The goal is to see if adding vitamin D3 leads to complete hair regrowth. Eighty adults aged 18-60 with localized alopecia areata will be treated every two weeks for six sessions and followed for three months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) topical solution
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a safe, affordable, and non-invasive treatment option for patchy hair loss due to alopecia areata.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 participants. Results may not apply to everyone, and the combination may not be more effective than microneedling alone.
