Drilling tiny holes in jaw may cut aligner time in half
NCT ID NCT05492773
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether making tiny holes in the jaw bone (micro-osteoperforations) can help straighten crowded lower front teeth faster when using clear aligners. Thirty adults with moderate crowding will be split into two groups: one gets aligners plus the bone-drilling procedure, the other gets aligners alone. Researchers will measure how quickly teeth move and how much pain patients feel.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Micro-osteoperforations (tiny holes drilled in the jaw bone to accelerate tooth movement)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could shorten the time people need to wear clear aligners for mild crowding, making orthodontic treatment faster and more convenient.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The procedure involves minor surgery and may cause temporary pain or swelling.
