New settings for cough machine may clear lungs better in ICU

Summary
This study looks at whether adjusting the settings on a mechanical cough-assist device (MI-E) can remove more mucus from the lungs of critically ill patients on breathing machines. About 26 adults who have been on a ventilator for more than 48 hours will take part. Researchers will compare the amount of mucus suctioned after using standard settings versus optimized settings.
