New hope for safer diabetes care in kidney patients?

NCT ID NCT02895750

Summary

This study tested if a once-daily, extended-release version of the common diabetes drug metformin is safe and effective for controlling blood sugar in people who have both type 2 diabetes and mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease. Researchers monitored 12 participants' glucose levels continuously for 12 weeks to see how well the drug worked and checked their kidney function and blood lactate to assess safety. The goal was to gather better data on using this medication in patients with reduced kidney function, where there is currently limited information.
