First seen Dec 24, 2025 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study tested whether metformin (a diabetes drug) and pirfenidone (an anti-scarring drug) can reduce fibrosis in people with oral submucous fibrosis, a condition that causes mouth stiffness and raises cancer risk. 45 adults with limited mouth opening received either the drugs or a placebo. Researchers measured changes in mouth opening, pain, and molecular markers to see if these affordable treatments could improve symptoms and prevent disease progression.
