Common diabetes drug tested in tiniest babies for lung protection

NCT ID NCT07120971

Summary

This early study is testing whether metformin, a medication commonly used for diabetes, is safe and well-tolerated in premature infants who have or are at high risk for a serious lung condition called bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Researchers will give different doses of the liquid medicine to 40 very premature babies to see how their bodies handle it and check for side effects. The main goal is to gather initial safety information to see if metformin could one day help protect and heal the lungs of these fragile infants.
