Common diabetes drug tested to help cystic fibrosis lungs

NCT ID NCT04530383

Summary

This study tested whether metformin, a common diabetes medication, could improve how cells in the airways work for adults with cystic fibrosis who also have diabetes. It was a small, terminated Phase 2 trial where participants took either a low or normal dose of metformin (or a placebo pill) for 14-week periods. The main goal was to see if the drug changed specific markers of ion channel function in nasal cells, which could indicate better lung health.
