Could a cheap diabetes pill slow down CLL progression?

NCT ID NCT01750567

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study tested whether metformin, a common and inexpensive diabetes medication, could help control chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in 37 patients whose disease had returned after prior treatment or who had a specific genetic change (11q deletion). Researchers monitored how long it took for the leukemia to worsen while patients took metformin. The goal was to see if this well-tolerated drug could delay the need for stronger treatments.
