Common diabetes drug tested to protect joint surgery patients

NCT ID NCT06280274

Summary

This small pilot study tested whether giving the diabetes medication metformin around the time of hip or knee replacement surgery is practical for a larger future trial. It involved 40 patients, some with diabetes and some without, to see if they could be recruited easily and take the medication as directed. The main goal was to check if a bigger study is feasible, while also gathering early hints about whether metformin helps control blood sugar and prevent infections after surgery.
