Common diabetes drug may protect against amputation risk

NCT ID NCT04583462

Summary

This study is testing if metformin, a common diabetes medication, can slow the buildup of calcium in leg arteries (hardening) in people with long-term type 1 diabetes. Over two years, 230 participants will take either metformin or a placebo pill, and researchers will use leg CT scans to measure changes in artery calcification. The goal is to see if this treatment can help control a serious complication that increases the risk of heart problems and limb amputation.
