Muscle relaxant showdown: which drug keeps drivers steadier?
NCT ID NCT06382662
First seen Sep 11, 2026 ยท Last updated Sep 11, 2026
Summary
Researchers compare how two muscle relaxants, metaxalone and tizanidine, affect driving ability and thinking in healthy adults. Each participant takes both drugs one at a time after a high-fat meal, then uses a driving simulator to measure lane control. The study aims to see which drug causes less driving impairment, which could help doctors choose safer options for patients who drive.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- metaxalone
- What this could lead to
- If metaxalone impairs driving less than tizanidine, it could offer a muscle relaxant option that is safer for people who need to drive.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with 20 healthy volunteers, so the results may not apply to patients or real-world driving. Both drugs can cause drowsiness, and the simulator cannot capture every driving risk.
