Can a simple mesh stop painful stoma hernias?

Summary
This study tested if placing a supportive mesh during the initial surgery to create a colostomy (stoma) could prevent a common and painful complication called a parastomal hernia. 200 patients getting their first colostomy were randomly assigned to have the surgery with or without the mesh and were followed for two years. The main goal was to see if the mesh safely reduced the number of hernias that developed.
