First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tested whether taking melatonin, a natural sleep hormone, before and after surgery could prevent delirium (sudden confusion) in older adults with broken leg bones. About 357 patients aged 70 and older received either melatonin or a placebo pill nightly from before surgery until 5 days after. The goal was to see if melatonin reduces the number of patients who become confused in the first 10 days after surgery.
