Flap or graft? new study aims to settle debate on best reconstruction after melanoma surgery

NCT ID NCT07354152

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two surgical techniques—perforator flap versus skin graft—for repairing the wound left after removing a stage II melanoma. Researchers want to see which method leads to faster wound healing and better quality of life. Forty adults with melanoma on the trunk, abdomen, or limbs will take part. The goal is to find the best way to heal without compromising cancer control.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

perforator flap reconstruction

What this could lead to

If this works, it could show that flap reconstruction heals faster and improves quality of life after melanoma removal, without hiding cancer recurrence.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 40 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Flaps might still delay spotting a recurrence, though no evidence supports that yet.
