3D-Printed expander vs. traditional device: which works better for kids?

NCT ID NCT07262892

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at two methods for widening the upper jaw in children aged 6 to 12 with a narrow jaw. One group uses a modern 3D-printed removable expander, another uses a traditional fixed expander, and a third group gets no treatment. Researchers will take 3D scans to measure changes in jaw width, tooth angles, and facial shape over 6 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help orthodontists choose the best expansion method for children, potentially leading to more comfortable and effective treatment.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage observational study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to all children. The study does not test a new drug or cure, only compares existing devices.
